Oscillator: The process begins with an oscillator that generates a waveform. Common waveforms used in subtractive synthesis include sawtooth, square, and triangle waves. These waveforms are rich in harmonics, providing a complex starting point. Filter: The core of subtractive synthesis is the filter. Filters can be low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, or notch. A low-pass filter, for example, allows low frequencies to pass through while attenuating higher frequencies. By adjusting the filter's cutoff frequency and resonance,you can shape the sound's timbre. Amplifier: After filtering, the sound passes through an amplifier, which controls the overall volume and can shape the sound's dynamics using an envelope generator. Envemelope Generator: The envelope generator (often referred to as ADSR - Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release) shapes how the sound evolves over time. It controls the attack (how quickly the sound reaches its peak), decay (how quickly it drops to the sustain level), sustain (the level during the main sequence of the sound), and release (how quickly it fades away). LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator):An LFO can modulate various parameters of the sound, such as pitch, filter cutoff,oramplitude, to create movement and variation in the sound.
